Prepare for a new growing year - January Jobs


- Plant bare-root trees and bushes, as long as the soil isn't frozen.


- Prune, gooseberries and blackcurrants.


- Vegetables, sow broad beans in pots in protected mild areas, placing them in a cold frame, poly tunnel or greenhouse.


- Under Cover, start cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, spinach, and turnips seeds of indoors, for an early crop.


- Fruit, prune apples, pears, blackcurrants, gooseberries and Autumn raspberries.


- Maintenance, clear all remaining plant debris from the vegetable plot. Burn or bin any diseased material such as blight-infected potatoes or any crops with rust. Cover seed beds with polythene, cloches or fleece blankets to help warm up the soil before sowing.


Start to plan a vegetable rotation system to ensure the same crops are not grown in the same beds year after year this help reduce the chance of disease.
