January in the Garden

In January, when the days are quite often cold and frosty, there are a few simple jobs you can do in the garden that will get you motivated for the Spring.

  1. Tidy up the garden, removing any leaves from borders.

  2. Check all tree-ties and stakes on established plants. Replace, tighten or slacken them if needed.

  3. Clean pots and containers and raise patio containers off the ground so they are not sitting in the wet.

  4. Wrap non-frost proof containers with fleece or bubblewrap to prevent them cracking.

  5. Plant bare-root roses, shrubs, hedging and ornamental trees, as long as the ground isn't frozen.

  6. Make sure you put out food and water for the birds.
